CMJ Artist To Watch: Sisu

Over 1,400 artists are playing CMJ this year. It’s impossible to see ‘em all, so the experts on the My Social List team will be hand-picking their “can’t miss” artists for the Music Marathon.

Who They Are: Sisu is the solo project of Sandra Vu, who writes and also records all the songs. You may recognize her as the drummer from Dum Dum Girls but this is a different kettle of fish altogether. Vu should see a great deal of adulation coming her way.

What They Sound Like: Think 80’s post-punk (Young Marble Giants, Xmal Deutschland, etc) but with more emphasis on pop hooks and swooning synth melodies with a dash of shoegaze thrown in for good measure.

What They’re Up To: Their debut album, Blood Tears, was released on the 17th of September via Mono Prism and a limited run of tapes on Burger. Recent tours have seen them open for Cat Power and Dirty Beaches.

Where To See ‘Em At CMJ: Sisu are playing the CMJ game hard, with four shows in four days: First up on the 16th of October is a show at The Flat with a great lineup that also includes Total Slacker and Habibi. On the 17th of October you can see them at an Impose Magazine party at Shea Stadium, while on the 18th they hit up The Delancey. Finally at Union Pool on the 19th they are part of the Inland Empire showcase with King Dude.

Essential Listening: Check out the stream of Blood Tears below via their bandcamp page. Personal favourites are Light Eyes (from their debut EP) as well as Cut Me Off from the new record.
