Over 1,400 artists are playing CMJ this year. It’s impossible to see ‘em all, so the experts on the My Social List team will be hand-picking their “can’t miss” artists for the Music Marathon.
Who They Are: Brooklyn band Total Slacker are (from L-R) Emily Oppenheimer (bass and vocals), Zoe Brecher (drums), David Tassy (guitar) and Tucker Rountree (guitar and vocals).
What They Sound Like: As the band name might suggest, there is a looseness and swagger to their songs. In essence, they take sounds that are often within the domain of arty and alternative bands but use them to write pop tunes. As a live band they are an intense beast, and you can stand in front of David Tassy at your peril, as he pirouettes with his guitar flailing.
What They’re Up To: When they aren’t conceptualising breadsticks or getting stoned at Olive Garden, Total Slacker regularly play at all your favourite NYC venues, and have just finished recording songs for their second album. The new songs they’ve previewed live this year sound immense. Their debut, Thrashin, was released in September 2011.
Where To See ‘Em At CMJ: Their CMJ scehdule starts at Pianos on the 15th, before hitting The Flat on the 16th on a bill that includes Sisu. On the 18th they come back to Pianos for an evening show that includes TEEN.
