Artist to Watch: Slonk Donkerson

On any given week there are hundreds of shows to see in New York City. It’s impossible to hit all of them, so the experts on the My Social List team will be hand-picking their “can’t miss” artists for the week.

Who They Are: Parker Silzer, Dylan Vandenhoeck and Zack O’Brien are originally from Pound Ridge, Westchester County NY, but have been based in Brooklyn for the last couple of years.

What They Sound Like: A classic power-trio, Slonk Donkerson rock out without sacrificing melody or subtlety, harking back to a time of SST artists from the 80s. One can imagine them touring relentlessly alongside Hüsker Du, Meat Puppets, and contemporaries such as early REM. As an added bonus it’s always a thrill to hear a Rickenbacker bass.

What They’re Up To: They just released a video for Watching Every Channel at Once (watch below), the title track of last year’s three-track EP. They also have two other albums (self-titled from 2010 and II released in 2011) as well as a live album. You can download the entire discography for free on their bandcamp page. At the time of writing they’re also previewing new material at shows which sounds like it may be their best yet.

Where To See ‘Em:  Head over to Pianos on Tuesday the 14th for their headline set, that show also features another recent MSL favourite, Journalism. Track future Slonk Donkerson shows HERE.

Essential Listening: Marvel at the video for Watching Every Channel at Once, which features our very own Dave Cromwell in a starring role.
