Artist to Watch: A Winged Victory for the Sullen

On any given week there are hundreds of shows to see in New York City. It’s impossible to hit all of them, so the experts on the My Social List team will be hand-picking their “can’t miss” artists for the week.

Who They Are: Composer Dustin O’Halloran met Stars of the Lid founder Adam Wiltzie in 2007 (while Wiltzie was on tour with the Sparklehorse), A Winged Victory for the Sullen‘s debut album was released in 2011.

What They Sound Like: Mixing up neo-classical with ambient and drone I could dazzle you with all the usual and beautiful metaphors but if you even occasionally dip into any of those genres then they are a must. And if you don’t, maybe this is a good time to get acquainted, just let the sound sweep you away and tug at your heartstrings.

What They’re Up To: The duo recently composed a score for Atomos, a dance piece for the Wayne McGregor Random Dance company. The score is set for release later this year, and you can stream Atomos VII below.

Where To See ‘Em: Tonight at Joe’s Pub! They play two different sets, one at 7:30pm and one at 9:30pm (tickets).

Essential Listening: I don’t think it would be hyperbolic to claim that their self-titled album from 2011 is a modern neo-classical masterpiece. Also stream the aforementioned new piece, Atomos VII.
