Artist to Watch: Disco Doom

On any given week there are hundreds of shows to see in New York City. It’s impossible to hit all of them, so the experts on the My Social List team will be hand-picking their “can’t miss” artists for the week.

Who They Are: The core line up of Anita Rufer, Gabriele De Mario and Flo Goette are supplemented by a rotating cast of drummers and keyboard players. Based out in Zurich, Switzerland, Disco Doom released their first record in 2002.

What They Sound Like: If I mentioned they have recently toured alongside Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr, Deerhoof, Butthole Surfers and Black Angels you might start to paint a picture in your head. Disco Doom are on the fuzzier side of things, I saw them supporting Built to Spill in Oxford in 2008 and was impressed with their live sound, which was a bit more full on than their studio work.

Artist to Watch: A Winged Victory for the Sullen

On any given week there are hundreds of shows to see in New York City. It’s impossible to hit all of them, so the experts on the My Social List team will be hand-picking their “can’t miss” artists for the week.

Who They Are: Composer Dustin O’Halloran met Stars of the Lid founder Adam Wiltzie in 2007 (while Wiltzie was on tour with the Sparklehorse), A Winged Victory for the Sullen‘s debut album was released in 2011.

What They Sound Like: Mixing up neo-classical with ambient and drone I could dazzle you with all the usual and beautiful metaphors but if you even occasionally dip into any of those genres then they are a must. And if you don’t, maybe this is a good time to get acquainted, just let the sound sweep you away and tug at your heartstrings.

Who They Are: Xavier Germain Poitras (vocals, guitars) & Louis Guillemette (drums, vocals) are from Montreal. While we’ve been raving about bands from Toronto for a while now, Montreal has quietly been churning out some great stuff too like The Besnard Lakes, No Joy and Tim Hecker to name a few.

Artist to Watch: Cheatahs

On any given week there are hundreds of shows to see in New York City. It’s impossible to hit all of them, so the experts on the My Social List team will be hand-picking their “can’t miss” artists for the week.

Who They Are: Nathan Hewitt (vocals, guitar), James Wignall (guitar, vocals), Dean Reid (bass, vocals, producer) and Marc Raue (drums) formed in London, England. That doesn’t tell the whole story though as Nathan is from Canada, Dan is from San Diego and Marc is from Germany, only James is British!

What They Sound Like: Something a little closer to home for me (Oxford, England), rewind the tape about 25 years to what is probably the least appreciated musical city of the UK. The one that gave the world Swervedriver and Ride, you can definitely file Cheatahs in that category; grandson-of-mustang-ford, if you will. The guitars have a metallic crunch and a bit more bottom end to them but also know when to soar.

Artist to Watch: Grand Resort

On any given week there are hundreds of shows to see in New York City. It’s impossible to hit all of them, so the experts on the My Social List team will be hand-picking their “can’t miss” artists for the week.

Who They Are: Andrés Pichardo moved from the Dominican Republic to Boston in 2009, after completing his studies he moved to New York in 2012. The lineup is completed with Steve Brown (guitar), Matt Billington (bass) and Jacob Cavell (drums).

What They Sound Like: There is definitely an 80s vibe to the songs, the guitar is high on the treble and the synths play a prominent role. Reference points would be OMD and New Order’s less dance-infused moments although personally I think a closer comparison would be The Sound.

Artist to Watch: Grass is Green

On any given week there are hundreds of shows to see in New York City. It’s impossible to hit all of them, so the experts on the My Social List team will be hand-picking their “can’t miss” artists for the week.

Who They Are: Andy Chervenak (vocals/guitar), Devin McKnight (guitars/bass), Mike Thomas (bass/guitars) and Jesse Weiss (drums) are from Boston and released their first record in 2010.

What They Sound Like: The bastard child of Fugazi and Pavement. Whilst they have many contemporaries in bands like Speedy Ortiz (with whom they just toured) and Big Ups, Grass is Green branch a little further out into angular guitar sounds and irregular rhythms.
